The University of St. Thomas, a Catholic university located in Montrose, received its biggest single bequest ever as the school moves closer to a nine-figure endowment goal.
The estate of James M. Hughes gave $6.5 million to the university, creating the James M. Hughes Endowed Scholarship Fund, according to a release. The money is expected to be used for undergraduate and graduate students in need.
The university is aiming to reach a $100 million endowment.
