First-generation college students flourish in business school

I have been at the University of Houston longer than most of our current undergraduate students have been alive.

Yet, I was still surprised to learn recently that many students on our campus are first generation in college.

For 40 percent of the over 5,000 business majors at the university’s Bauer College, neither parent has a bachelor’s degree. One student soon to graduate told me that when his grandmother from Austin attended his ring ceremony, it was her first time to ever be on a college…
